[pct-l] RE: Down Quilt

If you haven't already bought the down and fabric, check out the Sierra Designs "Wicked Fast Bag". It is a quilt that zips to a ground sheet. I compared the 30 degree model to a Marmot Hydrogen, and the Sierra seemed much "loftier" than the top of the Marmot. $210 and it only weighs 21 oz, including the approx. 4 oz ground cloth. The other commercial down quilts that I know of are by www.nunatakusa.com. Nice, but pricier and made to order. I did make a down quilt last year, like a Ray Jardine quilt only with baffles. Left one side open, tacked it to the side of the house open side up, and stuffed a fistful of down into each baffle. Repeat until out of down. Sewed it closed outdoors. (pick a calm day). If I'd seen the Sierra Designs, I'd have bought it instead making my own (but it was fun). See www.rei.com. A 45 degree version only weighs 15 oz. If you left the ground sheet home, it would be about 11 oz - like the Nunatak "Edge"

Well, after a couple of hours on the phone, I have managed to locate enough
Pertex Quantum fabric and 850+ down to make a down sleeping quilt. However,
having never made anything with down feathers, I am rather sure that it is
going to be hell. Is there anybody out there in cyberspaceland that has any
experience with either working with down or making a quilt? I am looking for
all of the information I can get my hands on BEFORE I begin making this
project, so if anybody knows anything, or knows anybody who knows anything,
I would love to hear what you've got to offer. Thanks.

Donna I told you and Jeff back in June 2002 that just letting people sleep in your backyard would be pretty generous, but what you guys do goes, far, far beyond that.

Do you remember that I said you guys are the Archangels?

Good afternoon, Mike,

I recommend you look at the Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics, Inc. web page on
Making Your Own Gear at http://www.backpacking.net/makegear.html
On the menu list under "Sleeping" projects select Item #4 Down Quilt by
Jeremy Padgett (Hungry Howie). I think he has very practical guidance on
how to sew and stuff a down-filled item. Besides, what other good reason do
you have to pitch your tent in the living room?

Enjoy....

I recently did a loop from Belden going first on Indian Spring to the PCT just past Poison spring. Here is the report.

Indian spring trail. was fun, but the trail is quickly getting overgrown. I lost the trail for about 1/2 mile or more, and was able reacquire it about the half way point. Its amazing since the fire at the turn of the century, the shrubbery is taking over! After 1997, this was the alternate route at Belden, till they fixed the trail. I hiked the next several miles on a road until I hit the PCT.

PCT - 1/2 mile past Poison springs (13.5 miles past Belden) . At 7000' there is only slightly patchy snow. No problem for any of us through hikers. I hiked back to belden at this point. Several of the creeks are full, all but one, was easily passable for any of us.

I met Carl (no trail name) and talked with him for awhile, until I had to get going so as to get back before dark... He named off about 10 other though hikers. I seem to have found one of the ultra front runners of the trail. I only recognized one of the other trail names 'leper-con' . Apparently he is near Belden as of Saturday.

Good Luck Carl on your hike....

Several months ago (maybe on this list?) I saw a technique for handling down
by wetting it. Made it easier to keep under control and easier to divide into
parts for use in a quilt or other project. It made some sense, though I've
never tried it. Anyone have a lead on this idea?

Article in today's paper says that on August 18th Greyhound will stop serving several smaller towns and cities. This may impact some hikers thinking of using the bus. Cities mentioned include: Ashland, Bend, Government Camp (Mt. Hood), Sandy, Snoqualmie Pass.

Also will impact Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and other states - cities not given. No mention of Canadian routes, like to Manning Park.

Not sure if that means they will refuse to stop if you want to get out or get on.

Not to change the subject but does anyone know exactly where the girl was
attacked by the mountain lion north of Kernville? Just wondered if it was
close to the trail? It was on fox news. Ground Pounder

Yours truly was busy this weekend in the San Gabriels filling gaps
caused by THE BEAR when I ran across Redbeard (started from Campo on
May 13). Redbeard was up at Little Jimmy on Wednesday with a few
people he didn't know. THE BEAR made his presence known and at 4 AM
an exasperated camper screamed, "I'D RATHER IN IN LAS VEGAS".
Redbeard said, "I'll go!" So they did. They guy paid for the room
and gave Redbeard $40 gambling money. Well, Redbeard couldn't lose.
He paid the guy back and got free drinks all night, finishing up by
losing $5.

This weekend I had the opportunity to day hike trails around Sonora Pass.
I met quite a few PCT thru hikers. Here is my report:

Trail Conditions --

Thru hikers coming from Tuolumne Meadows report no major problems with
snow, just occasional snowfield crossings which can be icy in the early
morning. There is enough snow left near Sonora Pass that some hikers were
glissading down the hill.

Two streams crossing were about thigh deep, but didn't cause any major
problems.

There were some blowdowns, but overall the trail from Tuolumne to Sonora
appears to be in good shape.

The main complaint I heard is that the mosquitoes were horrible. They've
now acquired a taste for thru hikers and are waiting in ambush for more.
The hikers requested that the trail maintenance crews remove all
mosquitoes from the middle third of this segment. Looks like a headnet
and deet are essential pack items for this journey.

People --

Meadow Mary was there doing her trail magic. She told me that True came by
on Thursday, and that earlier on Friday (6/25) Weather Carrot, Side Track
and Quixhote passed through.

I arrived around 5 pm on 6/26 and met Tigger, Captain Michael, Paparazzi,
Bec and Jimmy.

Tigger met her family and went off trail for a few days. Captain Michael
rode out with them. He's having achilles problems and was going to bounce
himself to Echo Lake to allow for several days of heel healing.

Paparazzi hiked out early Saturday morning.

Bec and Jimmy met their friend Aaron (Thanks for the beer, Aaron) and went
off-trail, but returned and restarted today (Sunday 6/27).

On Saturday around 11:30 Sprite showed up and asked if any of his friends
had come by. With a negative answer he decided to wait. Good move. By the
end of the day Skywalker, Home-made, Goat, Wicked, Sisu, Raru, Lisa,
Cicely-B, and GT (German Tourist) all pulled into camp.

Wicked made a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in Hetch Hetchy.

Cicely-B stayed a few hours and left Saturday.

Sisu turned her ankle crossing a stream and won't be covering major miles
until it heals.

The whole group left around 8 am today, Sunday (6/27).

Later today Laundromat, Iceman, Scrote and Radar came through. They
told me that Supertramp, Adam, Buck30 and Dude had hitched a ride to
Bridgeport. Mulligan was on his way to Kennedy Meadows.

Finally, Wildflower and Packman showed up shortly before I left.

So that's the PCT report from Sonora Pass.

Hank

I haven't worked with down myself, but I've heard various people say
they've had good success with wetting the down first, then stuffing the
quilt. The trick is to still be able to measure it accurately. I think
there was an extremely detailed description of this technique posted to
the list a few months ago, but I can't find it offhand. Maybe check the
archives?

There are a few web sites with project instructions for down quilts.
Try this one: http://www.newsushi.net/quilt.html

It is apparently possible to take a Rogue Valley Transportation District (RVTD) bus from Ashland, which Greyhound will soon stop serving, to Medford which it will continue to serve. RVTD also serves the Medford airport, but apparently only on weekdays. RVTD's website: http://www.rvtd.org/index.asp

I suspect we will find similar alternatives for many of the discontinued stops. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if one major reason for some of these changes is that Greyhound grew weary of trying to compete against government subsidized bus services. For those stops that will not be served by any public transportation service, watch for small private operators to fill the gap. Anyone want to start up a limo service from Whitney Portal? The market will prevail.

Thanks for the help everybody. It is much appreciated. I think I've got a
rough plan of how I am going to go about this, but I know it is going to get
ugly nonetheless. I'll report back to the list once I have had my battle of
the down.

That idea (wetting down, weighing out desired quantities for each section,
stuffing the down wet (or at least damp), closing the sleeve, then, when
sewing is complete, tossing the whole thing in a low-heat tumble dryer to
dry & re-loft the down) came from Marion Davison (Llamalady) - I'm sure it's
in the archives (if the search engine's working, that is ;-) )
