I haven't worked with down myself, but I've heard various people say
they've had good success with wetting the down first, then stuffing the
quilt.  The trick is to still be able to measure it accurately.  I think
there was an extremely detailed description of this technique posted to
the list a few months ago, but I can't find it offhand.  Maybe check the
archives?
