Hitching to and from towns is only necessary if you can't plan resupply
locations on trail, at road crossings via drive-up friends, resorts, ranger
stations or businesses, or towns.
All my resupply locations on the Crest and Divide did not require hitching.
Only when I have experienced medical emergencies have I had to hitch, and
they were the most vulnerable and dangerous moments of my life.
Hitching detracts from the wilderness lifestyle long distance hiking
provides, either extends the overall schedule of the trip or increases the required
daily mileage, might bring you new friends or the end of a gun, may get you
where you want to go...or not.
Solo hitching is very dangerous and I don't encourage it. Groups of two or
three is another story. Yogi's suggestions are very good.
