[pct-l] GPS - PDA
I am not sure what age has to do with going with or without a cell phone. I
am 64 and have been backpacking for more years than I care to think about. I
started before GPS or cell phones were available, using a compass and topo
map. You need to carry map and compass and/or GPS and know how to use them.
That is for navigation and is a big safety issue. The cell phone will not be
useable 90% of the time. Do not feel that it helps your safety. However, it
is convenient to have to make those rare contacts with home/friends from
open ridges or mountain tops near towns or from in/near towns. I carry one
now for that purpose. It is nice to have, but has nothing to do with a need
to navigate or to summon help.
Enjoy your hike.
