There are no hiking trails that I know of from the base of Alpine Meadows. I would suggest getting on the Tahoe Rim Trail in Tahoe City and follow it west about 10 miles to where it connects with the PCT near Twin Peaks just south of Alpine. The only trail near Alpine is part way up the access road called the Five Lakes Trail which connects with the PCT at the low point between Alpine and Squaw. The problem with the Five Lakes trail is that the trailhead is not very well marked. If you started from Squaw you could take the tram to High Camp 8,200 feet then hike a couple of miles to the PCT and go from there. As far as I know bear cannisters are not required in Desolation Wilderness but you could check out the website for Eldorado National Forest to be sure. I Permit will be required if you overnight in Desolation.
