I showed up with my trusty Pentax K-1000 to a photography class and we were
asked to show our cameras. All the fancy digital stuff came out, and then it
was my turn.
The teacher got this nostalgic look on his face and said, "Boy, that's a
workhorse! You could run over it with a truck."
It also takes awesome photos and the goats can't kill it.

Here's a water report for the San Jacintos (Calif.
Section B, CA 74 to I-10):

15 May: cache at Hwy 74 -- at least 15 gallons present

15 May: Penrod Cyn -- a small pool of water L of trail
as it crosses the canyon bottom for the first (i.e.,
southernmost) time. Did not look appetizing.

Live Oak Spring -- I did not visit, but hikers I met
report it's doing well.

16 May: Cedar Spring -- moderate trickling flow out of
pipe, trough full

16 May: Fobes Saddle -- did not see any evidence of a
water cache here (but admittedly I didn't look too
hard)

16 May: Tahquitz Valley -- stream flowing well across
PCT 0.1 miles before TV trail jct.

17 May: Strawberry Cienaga -- flowing -- need dipper
to collect water

17 May: N Fork, San Jacinto River -- running well.
Also running well are the tributaries encountered 1/2
mile and 3/4 mile N of here. In other words, since
you're probably carring LOTS of water from here, you
can shorten your burden just a bit by taking water
from the second tributary.

Black Mtn Campsite -- did not visit, but a handwritten
note attached to the post on the S side of Black Mtn
Rd indicates water is available at BMC. This note was
dated 12 May, but the note was hard to read, and so I
could be wrong about this date. The precise location
of this water at BMC is given on the note.

19 May: Snow Cyn Rd fountain -- operating in good
order

Enjoy!

It may not be the deputy's fault. Her superiors are responsible for her
actions.
Was this deputy trained on this weapon? If not, why was she using it?
If this deputy can't tell the difference in the types of ammunition she's
loading, why is she allowed to use the weapon?
If this deputy can't remember that the last shell into the magazine is the
first one fired, why is she allowed to use ANY weapon?

That said, send her to Yosemite/Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks. They
have way too many bears for the number of square miles available. Let her
reduce the ursine population by 99%. The remaining bears will then be able
to live off the land instead of having to live off the campers. Yes, I
know.....that's not politically correct. Too bad. Consider it the price to
be paid to correct years of horrible wildlife management practices.

I would like to do section F southbound around Memorial Day, and I was wondering
if local people in
that area have any opinions about parking at the Cameron Rd exit on Hwy 58.
That would
be the most convenient way for me, to park at the south end and get to the north
end and hike back. The parking at Walker Pass campground is further from the
highway
and so perhaps more, or perhaps less, secure. Two years ago I left my car at
Walker Pass
while I walked back from Horseshoe Meadow without incident. Anyway I won't
leave anything in the
car while I am gone.

As for getting to the other end, having not had much luck hitchhiking two years ago,
I was planning to hire a taxi from Ridgecrest or Lancaster at, no doubt, great
expense.

Or if somebody else would like to do that section at that time and would like to
arrange some
kind of shuttle, let me know.

I'm a Sheriff's Deputy in Riverside County and I have to admit that this
was pretty bad. You should be able to tell the difference in rounds
especially if you are
in the process of loading the weapon as she seems to have been doing. Go
ahead and bash away. We earned this one!

The Sierra snow melt is in full rage. There is hardly any snow registering
on any of the snow survey sites and only 4 inches at 11,400 feet elevation at
Tyndall Creek site just south of Forester Pass.

If I were hiking this year I would be willing to risk entering the Sierra
now, but would carry an ice axe and perhaps instep crampons for getting over the
higher passes. In two weeks or so, this equipment might not be even
necessary.

This early of a snow meltoff matches that of 1977 in which the least amount
of snow on record fell on the Sierra during the previous winter.

This is all in my humble opinion and your decisions should be based upon your
own skills, experience and comfort with snow, ice and runoff conditions.

Good luck!

Greg

If you park your car in bear country it is good to keep it clean and
orderly inside before you leave it. If bears look into your car and
it's messy with stuff scattered about they may break in expecting to
find food beneath the mess, even if you were careful to remove all food
and other smelly stuff (shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc).

What would you suggest for resupply points on a three-week section hike from
I-15 to Walker Pass?

Mojave or Tehachapi - I like Mojave.
