ConfuseUs say "Never bet your life on something that runs on batteries".
That is especially true for GPS units and cell phones.

Glad to hear that Darrell is doing well, I will be starting at Campo on May
2nd. I will make sure I avoid the Mexican Nationals and will keep my gear in
my tent at night when I am by the Border.

I purchased the MSR MIOX a while back and have been having similar problems
in using it. It blinks that the salt is too low, then too high, then the
battery light starts blinking. It usually takes 30 min to get a dose in the
water, then another 30 min to 2 hrs for it to purify the water. After
reading about Darrell's problems, I am taking the thing back to the
outfitter and going back to my PUR Hiker filter.

Tell Darrell to enjoy the hike.

  I scored three 1974 PCT Conference (read pre-PCTA, Warren Roger's authored
  and edited) magazines in prime condition.

  They are very cool with black and white scenic photos, weather info on an
  annual basis up and down the trail for snow, rain, temperatures, etc.
Even the
  envelopes, forms and a letter from Warren Rogers himself urging the reader
to
  join the "PCT Conference" are included.

  One has an article from Ned Tibbits about his thru-hike in 1972 or 1973
(it
  doesn't say, but it must have been before 1974).

  Also, in one is a letter to Warren Rogers for the readers of the magazine
  from Thomas Winnett, one of the authors of the first guide books, stating
that
  Eric Ryback and Chronicle Publishing were dropping their $10 million libel
  lawsuit against the authors and publisher of the guidebook for their
challenging
  statements about Ryback's PCT adventure.

  So pick up the first or second edition of the PCT Guidebooks if you can
find
  them and read what Winnett had to say.  I'll also bring these to the ADZ
for
  anyone interested in PCT historical stuff.

  I've invited Warren Roger's sons or daughters to join us at the ADZ also,
for
  a historical perspective.  Donna Saufley says that a 1975 thru-hiker will
be
  attending this year.  Of course, the "Flying Funk Brothers" from 1975 are
most
  likely to attend as they live nearby and have attended the last couple.

  That's very generous- but no, I cannot accept it.   I prefer to keep
  money out of this endeavor as much as possible.

  Just a few details from my latest phone conversation with Darrell in case
  there's news here to help anyone else...

  Just got off the phone from talking to Darrell and thought I'd give you
  updates on things that other hikers might want to know.  They are in
Idyllwild.
  Had a zero day there yesterday and are leaving for Big Bear sometime this
  morning.

  -It's been unseasonably warm.  Darrell has been sleeping out in the open
  every night so far, since Campo.  He used his tent for the 1st time last
night.

  -He said that the bull near Barrell Springs was a non-issue for him.  Not
in
  sight.

  -Apparently some hikers got held up by some Mexican nationals who'd
slipped
  over the border near Campo.  Their gear was stolen.  He did not know who
this
  was, so I'm sorry I don't have names to report.  Anyone about to start the
  hike, be wary near the border.

  -Snow approaching Idyllwild slowed him down, but he and Sitka worked
through
  it rather than detouring.  It was do-able but definite work.

  -His MIOX purifier seemed to stop working one day.  He tried about 20
times
  to use it and it kept stopping in mid-fizz (a technical term...) and kept
  blinking at him that his salt was either too high or too low.  He finally
quit
  trying and used his backup tablets instead.  He has purchased new
batteries and
  hopes that this will resolve the problem.

  If you're interested in experimenting with your body at altitude, you
  might consider hiking up Mt. Langley instead of Mt. Whitney.  It's 450'
  less in altitude, and a few miles south, but it offers a different
  approach (no pun intended).  The trailhead is at 10K instead of 8.5K.
  You might not even have to leave the parking lot to feel the altitude's
  effect on your body. <g>. If you choose, you could hang out by your car
  for the day, and return to Lone Pine to spend the night, obeying the
  climber's acclimation addage of "climb high, sleep low".  A relatively
  easy 6 mile hike will allow you to gain an additional 1K in elevation,
  and put you only 3K from the peak.  From that point, up and down is only
  9 miles round trip.  There follows a trail climb up to 12K which can be
  strenuous for us desk bound sedentary types. But, it's another point
  where you might start to feel negative symptoms.  If all is well, then
  go ahead and bag the peak, and enjoy the fact that you didn't have to
  file for a special permit, and aren't following the endless procession
  of people marching up the 99 switchbacks.

  In addition, the nature of the extraction device allows the user to
  actually see if venom is present in the wound.  Such knowledge would
  certainly have an impact on one's decision to lie quietly while waiting
  for help, or (as Bob Reiss would say)" Hike On".

  Last year I was Trail Magic Mamma on the AT. This year I find myself in
Arizona. I guess we should come to Zero Day since we are so close ;-) As a
bonus, we get to see Radar from last year....and probably a few others we
know plus lots of folks new to us.

  At the moment, we are wrapping up the estate of my mom and her husband in
Arizona. We are now planning to take time off to go to Zero Day ;-) If
anyone needs a ride from the Pinetop/Lakeside area, let us know. We haven't
looked at how to get there from here yet, so if you might be in our path,
let us know. We have the same beat up ol' camper van that transported
hundreds of AT thru hikers last year. Hope it makes it! ;-)
