You'll need a permit for the Desolation Wilderness and they did check. As
someone pointed out get a thru-permit from the PCTA.
In 2000, which I believe was considered a low snow year, there was nothing
really significant, but I remember losing the trail at a junction that was under
snow just after Echo Lake and following another trail around a couple small
ponds to the East. Fortunately there was some signage that got me back on the
PCT instead of going around in circles. In another area through some heavy
pines I lost the trail momentarily.
When and if you hit snow just try to note where you are on the map and which
way the trail heads. It's not likely you'll need to use a compass, but may
have to retrace a few steps.
