agreed. Red's store is pretty well-stocked. unless you get there in
very late season (mid september). I was there on sept 10th last year
and they were out of a TON of stuff, but we still managed to get
enough stuff to resupply in the store (just not exactly what we
wanted).

Glad the list is back up. Thanks for your efforts! We will be hiking
from Castle Peak on Hwy 80 in NCal, to Mt Whitney. The JMT book has good
north to south directions, but does anyone know of a book that gives
directions north to south from Castle Peak to Tuolumne Meadows? It is a
bit confusing to have to read the guidebook backwards!
On another subject, I too have been enjoying the discussion about trail
attitude. When I attended the ADZPCTKO, I was really impressed by the
positive, serviceful, joyful atmosphere and attitude of the group as a
whole, and it made me think that, since hiking the trail is what
everyone had in common, it must have had quite a positive effect on
people. I was particularly interested in Jeff's story of his brother,
the Buddhist monk. I live in a community that practices meditation and
yoga, and one of the things we do is take regular seclusions for a few
days to a week, usually. We have an oft quoted saying here, "The price
of greatness is seclusion". It is a wonderful and, many times, very
tough experience, but you almost always come out having learned a lot,
and with a fresh outlook and deeper calm. Although I haven't done it
yet, I expect hiking the trail will be a lot like that, only probably
more so. I look forward to finding out!

Hi Fellow walkers-

I'm very glad the board is up and running again! Thanks.

I have a fuel question for our JMT hike which starts at Horseshoe
Meadows on June 9!!! So soon YIIIPPPPIEEE.

I'm using a Gigapower and have the big fuel canisters (220g). How many
should I carry at once? I cook the standard Lipton dinners, raman
noodles, etc. and boil water for 1 or 2 cups of tea or hot choc. per
day.

I've broken the trip into the following:

Horseshoe Meadows to Whitney Portal ~35 - 40 miles---- 1 canister?
<we're skipping Crabtree to Kearsarge Pass (25 miles) b/c we have to
walk our friend out to Whitney portal. He can't do the whole trip so he
is stopping there. And, I can't let him walk out alone. He will take
us by car to Independence to the Kearsarge Pass trailhead. Skipping
Forrester Pass might be good this time of year, anyway. Any comments on

this part of the trail we are missing? I figure we'd make up for it by
seeing something not on the JMT like the Onion Valley/Kearsarge Trail
and the Cottonwood Pass trail where we start.> Who ever said you have
to be a purist?

Kearsarge Pass Trail to JMT to VVR ~ 95 miles---- 2 canisters?
VVR to Tuolumne ~ 60 miles----2 canisters to get from VVR to Happy
Isles????
Tuolumne to Happy Isles ~ 22 mi

Oh, my wife is on the trip too. So we will double the above numbers of
canisters each carrying our own ;) She always accuses me of dishing off

weight on her. ha ha ha. Not true really, IMO. For some reason she
still goes backpacking with me.

Thanks for the help,
Nate

I skip all places that charge for mail drops. and even if running low if

they sell supplies i won't do business with them I will find another
place. It don't cost them money to take a package that come sin the mail

ands et it on a shelf. So when I did the pacific crest and other major
trials I skipped all the places that charged for mail drops. sure that
meant carrying a heavier load at times but it sure beat doing business
with rip off business that is just taking advantage of there location.

Does anybody know a projection for snow conditions on the John Muir
Trail around mid-June? Will you need any special gear to get through
and is the trail easy to follow?

I'd mail freeze-dried food to both, if that's what you're using for your
main
meal. I've been to Reds Meadow twice. As I remember it had a decent
selection of drinks, ice cream and fishing supplies, but not much after
that.
About the ambiance of an ARCO jiffy mart, except woodsy. The
restaurant
was open for breakfast and lunch, but they took reservations for dinner,

mainly to take care of the cabin rental folk. But, you'd need to
confirm
that with Reds Meadow Resort. There's a shuttle bus to Mammoth Lakes
that
operates 7-5 daily where there are real grocery stores.

One of my room-mates was watching the travel channel
when my ears picked up the magic words of "Ben and
Jerry's". Number five on the "top pig outs" in the USA
was the Vermonster..and obscene amount of ice cream in
one sitting.

But guess what #3 was? That's right the Pancake
Challenge in Seiad Valley. There was Rick talking
about his pancakes and a nice view of the store where
many of us parked out butts while chowing down on an
obcense amount of food. (Even his omelletes were a lot
for my thru-hiker appetite!) The blurb mentioned the
PCT "and the hearty travelers who walk this 2650 mile
trail". It was also quite funny to see some of the
local attempt the challenge. Having seen a thru-hiker
attempt it last summer, the sight looked all too
familiar! A bit green around the gills and the look of
"NO MORE".

The spot even had a few pics of thru-hikers attempting
the challenge. Including the one in the recent PCTA
Communicator with a person face down in a pile of
pancakes. Nice little trip down memory land. IF you
happen to catch this show, it may bring back some good
(or bad! :D) memories for you.

I have read a lot of trail journals, and I was telling
Linda that I agree that there aren't many out there
that are very descriptive of the trail. Most people
talk about social activities and towns, which is fine
and entertaining in its own right. When I thru-hiked
the AT, my goal was to keep an objective, very
descriptive journal of the hike as I experienced it.
I got a few vicarious hikers interested in it, but it
turned out that it was difficult to maintain and I
think my family found it too dry. They wanted to know
what I was doing, not seeing. I added more subjective
material eventually.

Still, I did keep it very descriptive of the land and
animals I saw, and I continued this style with my PCT
journal. The PCT journal seemed to morph into "all
about me" much sooner than the AT one, and I didn't
get to finish my hike....but if you are interested in
objective journals, they are at
www.trailjournals.com/nocona.

Some other journals that are more descriptive are
Troubadour's (www.pcthiker.com) and Sweeper's (he
hasn't hiked the PCT), and I seem to remember Brian
and Roy's being quite descriptive of trail conditions
(http://www.accesscom.com/~kkbunya/pct/).

My recollection of the stores from two trips:

Tuolumne Meadows - excellent selection of most everything, including
light
weight foods and fresh foods. One could resupply here.

Reds Meadow - very limited supply. I wouldn't resupply there.
