We just keep on making history. 130 hikers and PCT supporters gathered =
at Lake Morena Campground for the 3rd Annual Pacific Crest Trail Kick =
Off. The overwhelming support for this event by hikers, equestrians, =
supporters, historians, and PCT adventure-seekers continues to astound =
everyone associated with the Trail. In perfect weather we once again =
came together to do good works on Friday, April 27th, through Sunday, =
April 29th. An estimated 30 hikers had started at the monument =
Thursday and Friday. There were automibiles driven by volunteers =
meeting hikers in San Diego, Campo, Cibbets, Mt Laguna, Warner Springs =
and other locations with no names to make it possible for hikers strung =
out over 100+ miles to come together for the annual event. Hikers in =
previous years covered great distances to come home. The ADZ organizers =
work hard to make the Kick Off a noncommercial, unsponsored, spontaneous =
event with "no rules." The no-rules gear contests were rousing, =
informative, and entertaining. Stove makers milled and shaped dozens of =
soda cans into miniature rocket engines capable of boiling huge kettles =
of water almost instantaneously while burning almost no fuel. Hikers =
made new friends and renewed old friendships People came from far away; =
Switzerland, Great Britain, and even some foreign countries like North =
Carolina and Alabama. Stay tuned to this channel for first-hand =
accounts from attendees who know a lot more than I do and who are much =
more articulate in their accounts. Hike on!! Bob Riess
