I think it is the common bond that all the thru-hikers and also the section hikers have. We shared a similar goal, whether hiking together or solo or for that matter both. Although enjoying all the great mountains is probably also true, but I think it is more true that we share comradery of doing the same goal, using simular equipment and simular resupply points, and endure simular weather, etc. That gives us a common bond. ?Pleasurable?
I think there is a certain amount of pleasure (believe it or not) in hiking all day. Most people probably woundn't understand. But there has to be some reason why I like hiking most Saturdays in the Summer near Belden for 26 miles or so. In the same way, hiking on the PCT is fun, because there is a goal of finishing the trail, Exersize which energizes us and about 300 of us who get the PCT bug.
There we go again, where is that bug. Who Bit me and how do I get cured....

It is true, Once Bitten (by thru hiking), Forever Hooked!
But, what really is the bite of the trip that we find so
pleasurable? We have discussed sex and the moving party
on trail, but that doesn't apply to the solo hiker who is
equally smitten. When it is all said and done, is it the
bond we share with fellow hikers struggling to accomplish
the same adventure (as Donna referred to), or is it the
bond we develop with the mountains, the air, the streams,
the wild? Mtnned
