You could meet him just off trail at Elk Lake Campground, about 25-30 
mi. W of Bend on the Cascade Lakes Highway, and hike with him north to 
McKenzie Pass, where it would be easy to hitch into Sisters. This only 
about 30 miles, but you'd be hard pressed to find a prettier section. If 
you wanted to go a little longer, you could continue another 18-19 mi. 
to Hwy. 20 at Santiam Pass, where you could also hitch to Sisters. As 
far a public transportation, this is an area in which Central Oregon is 
sorely lacking. Might have to rely on your thumb.
