Like many hiking traditions it started off on the AT.
Originally, it was a given name. Now, most people
choose their own. Sometimes it reflects a personality
trait or a new persona they want to take on.
In my case, my "trail name" is my real name as well.
There are two Pauls at work. Guess what I am called?
My friends call me Paul Mags..and often just "Mags".
And in the trail community, called Mags.
As mentioned before, the fact that my grandfather,
father, and two brothers all have the same nickname
makes it really cool for me.
Take a name..or don't take a name. Get one picked for
you, or don't. It is all good.
Paul "Mags" Magnanti..
