OK, the pcta website archives came up empty (they only had a link to Jonathan 
Breen's journal, not the journal itself). The actual journal was apparently 
never archived by web.archive.org.

I googled around and found someone who seemed to have known Jonathan back in his 
  Dartmouth days (which is where he was when he did the PCT). I contacted that 
person who put me in touch with Jonathan. It turns out both of them have a copy 
of Jonathan's journal "somewhere on a CD in a box in the basement". Jonathan 
seemed quite willing to help unearth the thing as did his friend. No promises 
were made, but I am hopeful that it will see the light of day soon.

Sometimes the net blows my mind.
