[pct-l] Flip-flop exit & transport @ Tehachapi or Onyx

Making the jump from Tehachapi or Walker Pass makes tremendously good sense for the reasons you mention. Kennedy Meadows is well off the main highway and away from major transportation options, which would make the finish exit more complicated. I will make sure all of this great info (thanks on behalf of everyone!) is posted and of course, will be available online when hikers arrive here in A.D.

Hopefully none of this will be necessary, and the snow will melt in time. By May when the hikers start coming through here, much may have changed.

It seems to me that if you're flip-flopping, you'd want to get at least
past the Mojave Desert (in terms on what you'll need to finish up at the
end of your trip). Will the stretch from Kennedy Meadows to either
Tehachapi Pass or Walker Pass be a problem in September? If not, it
seems like it would be easier to exit at either of those two passes and
head down to Bakersfield then on to points North. It seems that using
public transportation would accomodate all the different schedules
involved in HYOH. Arranging for chartered vans or busses might
accomodate a few groups (and might be more fun) but I believe it would
be worthwhile for us to scope out other possibilities.

I notice that Kern Regional Transit has routes serving Tehachapi,
Mojave, Bakersfield and Onyx. See

>From Bakersfield, Greyhound will get you to Vancouver BC in about 30
hours. Greyhound can then get you to Manning Park in a little under 4
hours. Find Greyhound schedules & fares at http://www.greyhound.com/

Another alternative is using Amtrak from Bakersfield to Seattle, then
the bus:
