[pct-l] Bounce box- is size important?
Not really applicable in the case of an "ice axe bounce
box," but the USPS now offers a flat rate priority mail box.
This box measures about 12" x 10" x 6", which is large
enough to hold items that one would typically bounce along
the trail. However, because it is a Flat Rate box, the
weight of the parcel is irrevelant. As long as it fits
inside, it travels, in this case for $7.70 to any location
in the US. Since weight and distance, with standard pacels,
are each factors that determine shipping cost, the Flat Rate
box can offer some dramatic savings over the course of
repeated mailings. And since it's a Priority mailing, the
free forwarding service is also in effect if the box remains
unopened.
For the space-efficient hiker, this box might also be of use
as a food resupply parcel, especially if sending parcels
from across the country. In fact, sending three such parcels
would often be cheaper than sending 1 heavy non-flat-rate
parcel from the east coast to a PCT trail town.
In any case, three cheers for the flat rate box! Woo hoo!
