I like the Sawyers brand repellent, the "composite" formula, that supposedly
has an extra ingredient to work against black flies. On the AT, when the
torment would start, I'd spray (non-aerosol) my bare legs & arms, then dab a bit
on my ears, face, & neck. It worked instantly and lasted for hours, even if
sweating some.
On the PCT I'll carry a 2 oz spray bottle, or 2, and the 6 or 8 oz
refill will be in my bounce bucket. Always double bag repellent, or any other
liquid for that matter, because repellent will damage some plastics. Definitely
keep it off watches; take a watch off to spray; and I'd test the inside of any
plastic watch band. I also recall a PCT-L post about repellent damaging
camera buttons, removing the symbol over a period of time.
