[pct-l] Shipping/Transporting gear from east to west.

Go ahead and put it in the box prior to checking it. Most airports have
X-Ray CatScan machines for baggage now so it may not need to be opened at
all. If it does need to be opened, The TSA people will repack it into the
box and tape it shut.

Knives and any other sharp item (ice ax, crampons) are fine in checked
baggage. I would not pack any stoves or fuel bottles as each airline has
their own policy which may be stricter than the TSA policy. i.e. TSAs
policy is that stoves and bottles are good to go if there is no residual
fuel odors emitting from them. Southwest Airlines will not allow them if
they have been used..regardless of how clean they may smell..Send that type
of stuff UPS Ground along with any matches or lighters that you may need.
