[BULK] - Re: [pct-l] How the PCT differs from the PCT-L

Also-

E-mail, by it's nature, is a horrible way to communicate.
I've warned against inter-office memos, notices, etc. being broadcast
via e-mail, because what is actually a simple intent to inform, appears
as a clipped, cold command, demand or order. Our management staff here
has been wrestling for some time now to find an effective, yet humane
way to communicate with the firm as a whole. E-mail, so far, has proven
NOT to be the right method.

I've found that if a person is well trained in literary composition,
their e-mails tend to read as old-fashioned letter correspondence.
Unfortunately, this art is becoming less practiced in today's business
environment...

Emoticons, acronyms and embedded images help, somewhat, but if not used
effectively, these devices fail to add that human warmth into the
communication.

Take heart, though! If you're lucky enough to attend ADZPCTKO, you'll
meet a lot of those who post on the PCT-L and you'll find that any
negativity is virtually non-existent within this group! The Pacific
Crest Trail IS the people who hike it, more so than the actual trail
itself.

Chuck,

IMHO, the negativity of which you speak is largely an illusion. What
you're seeing, in posts that appear derisive or opinionated, is mostly
the result of the medium. By its back and forth nature of interaction,
and because of natural human tendency to appear "correct" and "educated"
before a large group of one's peers, the list has a tendency to serve as
a debate forum. Debaters typically hold no personal grudges; the goal is
simply to walk away from the debate having left a good impression of
oneself and clear communication of one's views.

Real life has body english. The lists do not. Without visual and
contextual cues, we're left only with language here, and language can
communicate only so much. For that matter, real life has its own set of
illusions. Sometimes it's easier to get at the soul of a person without
the self-conscious intrusion of reality.

That said, some people may throw negativity around from time to time,
and damn every one of them.
