[pct-l] GPS, distance and speed.

The Garmin E-trex Legend, Venture and Vista are WAAS enabled.
The basic e-trex, Summit and Camo are not.

WAAS allows a far better 3-dimensional triangulation, and therefore much higher accuracy in elevation reports.

My Rhino, which is WAAS enabled, will fluctuate up to 50 feet while I'm moving, but once I stop, it will settle down into the same accuracy as the horizontal (2-D) location report.

I'd recommend spending the extra bucks for a WAAS enabled unit, to anyone considering buying a GPS unit.

Well, I have two GPS units, one about 7 years old (early Garmin 12XL)
and a newer Garmin etrek. With either one, I can stand on the beach a
few feet above sea level and gett elevation ranges from -100 feet (yes
supossedly below sea level) to about that much or move above. It seems
in low end consumer units at least, the altitude accuracy is not very good.
