Well, I have two GPS units, one about 7 years old (early Garmin 12XL) 
and a newer Garmin etrek. With either one, I can stand on the beach a 
few feet above sea level and gett elevation ranges from -100 feet (yes 
supossedly below sea level) to about that much or move above. It seems 
in low end consumer units at least, the altitude accuracy is not very good.
