I offer the advice of General Dwight D. Eisenhower:

"Plans are worthless, but planning is everything. There is a very great
distinction because when you are planning for an emergency you must start
with this one thing: the very definition of 'emergency' is that it is
unexpected, therefore it is not going to happen the way you are planning."

Learn all you can, and fit it all into the best plan you can think of based
on the information you have, because without a plan it is hard to organize
the information.

But don't take your plan to seriously, and be ready to change it almost
daily, because unexpected things happen on the trail, and when
circumstances change, the plan should change too. And if you have done
your planning, you will be able to change your plan without having to
review all the information again.
