[pct-l] Milage Question

There are some very deep gullies at the southern end of this leg. The trail
will contour along one side of the gully until it reaches the bottom, then
contour back out. In some cases these contours can be over a half mile, so
you might walk over one mile to make less than a half mile of progress
north. When I hiked this area southbound, I recall seeing my truck just a
bit ahead, making the trip through one of these gullies, and coming out to
see I was no closer to my truck than I was a half hour earlier. The trail
also contours around the nose of ridges the same way. Sure don't want the
trail to climb or drop at anything less than a constant easy grade!

The sandy flat I mentioned is about nine miles up, about one mile into Map
A12. The third gate is another possibility, but may be to far if coming from
Cuyamaca that day.

I would not count on any water at the Third Gate Water Cache. There was only
a couple quarts in early January. Charlie and his group plan to cache water
there sometime around April 10 or later.
