Dave,
A big very solid saltine doesn't sound very solid nutritionally over a long
hike. It sounds like you're looking for something densely nutritious that will
hold up to being spread with something? Do you have access to a dehydrator? It
seems you'd be better off with one of the Logan bread recipes (several online
and in backpacking food books), load it up with wheat germ, molasses, dried
milk, etc for lots of nutrition, then slice when baked & dry till hard as you
want. Don't go too dry or you may be looking at a dental emergency. It's really
yummy dipped in mocha or even split pea soup till it softens.
My guys went on a BSA canoe trek in Boundary Waters last summer and they
carried Logan bread that was very calorically dense. It can go for breakfast,
lunch, dinner, or snack in many disguises or dress-ups.
