I should've included the "Strum Stick" on my other list of instruments.  It's a cross between a sitar, guitar, and banjo, and is simple to play.  Pretty much just put a finger on any fret you want, and it will sound good.  Makes playing simple for the novice.  They weigh 11 oz, and measure 29" long by 4" wide.  Which is pretty packable..  Or just grab the gig bag for it, and strap it to the pack.  Some info is here:
