September is a wonderful time to hike the JMT. The mosquitoes should be 
gone and the streams are much easier to cross. I started on Mount Whitney 
on the 3rd and finished up on the 20th. There were a few frosts, but no 
snow. The weather was pleasant when I did it (in 2001).
