I agree with Christine - two poles are the only way to go. Some people
use only one, I guess, but for me at least, two poles are far more than
twice as effective than one. One pole is almost useless by comparison.
I prefer no springs. I don't like the mushy feel that springs give. I
rely on my poles for so much that when I plant them in a certain place I
like to know from the feel of them whether they're going to stay there
or slip. Springs obscure that feedback. But that's just my personal
preference.
I also really like the "positive angle" (i.e. bent) grips on some Leki
models. It helps keep my wrists in a more natural and less RSI-prone
position.
