[pct-l] canisters in the Southern Sierra

Seems to me that you won't have a need for a canister until about Crabtree
(where there's probably a bear box; I'm sure someone will know)...where are
you exiting?

In '94, in a stream drainage just out of Kennedy Meadows, though, we had a
magnificent encounter with a young cinnamon/gold black bear who crossed the
trail in front of us, proceeded about 50 yards up the hill, then sat under a
tree watching us like the tourists we were. We got him on video - and have
misplaced the film. Go figure!!!!

| now i DO NOT want to reawaken the canister wars, but i
| confess i don't want to carry my 2-pound-plus
| Bearikade on my upcoming hike of Section G.
|
| for those who are not rabid haters of canisters, do
| you know if bear conditions in the area warrant my
| carrying a canister or not? i've never had to
| counterbalance before, and so i worry that i wouldn't
| do it correctly. but if bear problems are minimal
| then i'll take my chances.
|
| thanks for your input.
