[pct-l] first time sectin hiker needs advice.
The Big Bear City Fire Station lets thru-hikers camp and shower - and they =
should be starting to pass thru BBC any day now. So you could get some fir=
st-hand advice! If you do some day hikes or overnights in your area soon, =
you'll have lots of thru-hiker company on the trail. The one danger hiking=
with inexperienced people (of whatever age) is if they get separated, pani=
c, and wander out of earshot off the trail. So: 1) they have to understand=
why they have to stick with you. 2) If they lose sight of you, they STOP,=
yell, blow whistle, may use an FRS "walkie talkie" radio. 3) they each hav=
e a sleeping bag or plenty of clothes, shelter (space blanket or poncho/tar=
p), food, and water and are mentally prepared to solo camp right where they=
are or in a sheltered spot very close by. This is not meant to discourage=
you and your daughters - quite the reverse. I think you are safer on the =
trail than you are in town, as long as you have what you need and the sense=
to use it. Hey, you could practice by camping at the Fire Station with th=
e rest of the hikers!
