I'd exit Whitney, going down the east side to Whitney Portal.  You should be
able to catch a ride there.  After R&R, I'd hire a ride in Lone Pine, or mooch a
ride from the hang gliders at the Lone Pine airport, and return to the trail
from Horseshoe Meadows, over Cottonwood Pass.  The book of lies makes it to be
twenty miles (4 from the trailhead to Cottonwood pass) to the Whitney junction
in Crabtree Meadows. That's about 4 miles of reasonable up and 16 mostly down.
Not bad with the fresh weight of resupply.
