I believe that Jim Whittaker did start REI as one of the original founders.He quit because they became too big and demanded too much of his time. Anyway, he doesn't have anything to do with RMI - his twin Lou runs the show. I went to a slide show promoting his book "On the Edge". I found him to be a regular guy and I found his book to be quite readable.
