[pct-l] Absolute Barebones Dehydrating List

Hi again,

I have a lot of trail stuff on the mind today.

Another topic: I'm going to dehydrate trail food
again, as I did on my first attempt. Here are the
foods that I considered a failure in the dehydrator:

Canned veggies of any kind (hard as rock)
Canned salmon (too stinky, not appetizing)
Fresh squashes (too spongy)
Canned beans (too hard)
Fresh green beans (hard to rehydrate)

My barebones items, the best of the best (we never
tired of these):

Spaghetti sauce leather & ground beef w/ mushrooms
(just add the spaghetti and voila! gourmet dinner!)
Fruit rollups
Boiled chicken
Broccoli
Spinach
Canned pineapple, peaches and pears

Other goodies we could do without:

Imitation crab meat
Fresh strawberries
Tuna
Turkey

I'm a bit short on time and want to dehydrate
efficiently, focusing on only drying the best foods
that I never tired of. I used our dried fruits as
snacks and our meats and veggies to bulk up Lipton
dinners. I also stopped eating candy bars after the
AT in favor of Luna, Cliff and Balance bars, and we
are investigating adding TVP this time. I want as
much protein as we can carry.

With that in mind, does anyone else have suggestions
for the absolute must-have dehydrated foods for the
thru-hiker? Any recipes or items of special nature
that you consider the best dehydrated food you've ever
had or made?

By the way, if anyone wants directions on how to dry
out any of the above mentioned foods, just email me.

Thanks,
Nocona (and Bald Eagle)
