[pct-l] trekking poles

I admit, I've had the poles collapse at inopportune times - crossing a
gnarly stream, for example - but they can't be beat for a long sidehill
march on snow, short pole in uphill hand, long pole in downhill hand...

But yep, gear is highly personal and you hike your own hike, etc, etc. I
take the collapsing pole issue as a minor inconvenience and take the slight
risk of having a pole collapse when I'm leaning on it too hard.

Marge's experience with the Black Diamond poles makes me think of trying
those out - if the locking mechanism's reliable, it would lessen
considerably the poles' tendency to collapse just at the wrong time.

Then again, there just might be a special pole demon that hangs out in
telescopic poles and waits for that special opportunity to inject invisible
teflon into the pole segments and make 'em collapse. You never know. It
might be related to the MSR stove demon that hangs out in the fuel
connection and causes leaks. Hmmn.

To be honest, never felt the need to do that. Seems
like one more thing that can go wrong with gear.
Found that to esp. true with poles that adjust while
skiing (or falling into lots of snow in my case!).
Seems the poles collapse at the least advantageous
time...

But there is no one silver bullet for the perfect set
of gear. What works for one person may not work for
another...
