[pct-l] Sth Cal Conditions

Question to the list... RE: Ice Axe

I would prefer not to have to carry the axe until Kennedy Meadows. How
big of a risk would I be taking if I didn't take it along for the San
Jacinto stretch? Obviously I would not be willing to risk my life on a
dangerous snowfield without an ice axe, but will the danger really be
that great? Admittedly I know nothing about the trail conditions, so I
will defer to the judgement of the mailing list.

Which brings up my second question. If the consciences is that the axe
is necessary, Where should I plan on picking this up? Warner Springs? I
know this question makes me sound pretty ignorant for a future thru
hiker, but I've already mailed off my guide books in my bounce box to
Mt.Laguna, so I'm unable to reference them.

Thank's in advance to all responses to my post,
Mike

2002'ers:

I suggest that you plan to carry your ice axe across San Jacinto area
and
mail it to Kennedy Meadows from Cabazon (or Big Bear if you don't mind

carrying it up several thousand feet of elevation). It is not likely
that
you will need it in the San Bernardino or San Gabriel mountains this
year.

Best regards,

Strider
