I've been there 3 times.
All three were pretty much the same:
*Walk in the gate, past the barking dog.
*Look around for someone to tell me where my stuff is. After a while a
cowboy (or girl) wanders over
*Rummage through the stone shed, with the steel door, and the 3 crossbars
holding it shut, till I find my bucket.
*Get shown the hiker box (a 55 gallon drum, actually), and told where to
leave any trash, and the cowboy (or girl) wanders away.
*Get left alone while I eat the heavy canned stuff I packed to eat at the
resupply, and sort through my stuff.
*Leave without hanging out too long, or seeing anyone to say goodbye to.
Not hostile, not friendly, not helpful, not much of anything. I never
stayed long enough to "wear out my welcome."
This is not a trail angel, nor a hostel nor a place for a break
HOWEVER if you are not in the mood for a break, or leave the wilderness, it
is a hell of a lot closer to the trail than VVR.
On my hikes, I didn't want to leave the trail, so the $45 was worth not
having to take a detour and lose a day or two.
