[pct-l] Muir Trail Ranch

Muir Trail Ranch does NOT cater to hikers EXCEPT to provide food resupply
[for a fee] and a limited store. They do NOT make money providing resupply.
It is merely a service that they provide to JMT hikers. [$45 is chump change
considering that they rent the ranch for $9,000 per week!] Don't expect a
big hello, a warm hug and a free beer like Butch did. Sorry. That being
said, I would always resupply there because it is much more convient than
VVR. I would get my beer at Mammoth.

I would hike this route by keeping food outside the bear canister using bear
boxs for the first fifty miles [to Woods Creek] and use a single bear
canister the second fifty miles. I have, in fact, done a sixty mile hike
with my wife using a single standard canister and I hike 6-8 miles per day.
[ Walking 16 MPD I might target Crabtree, Center Basin and Rae Lakes bear
boxs]

The larger Bearicade is hige and relatively light but expensive and hard to
pack. The way that I carry it is to strip the pack bag [saves 3 pounds] off
my old Jansport D-3 frame pack and lash the canister to the frame. [The
loaded canister weighs 26-28 pounds by itself!]. I then lash a couple of
heavy items under it [Tent, bag etc] and my partner [wife] carrys all the
small stuff.
