As an alternative, I found it really easy to hitch into Independence, and the motel owner gave me a ride back. ($20 per carload, $10 for me). Lazy bastards won't like the 2500' climb back to Kearsarge Pass. ( it was very well graded, though, and SPECTACULAR views)
