Good place to ship the ice ax.  It's unlikely you will need it sooner 
although the San Jac area (Fuller Ridge) can be icy.  You might also run into 
some snow above Wrightwood but in "97, a moderate to light snow year, both 
were passable.  I would leave the GPS home, but it's your hike.  Good luck!
