Re Crater Lake, That's not a side trip any more. The trail up to the rim is
the official PCT tread "for hikers" now (signs and all). See the 1997
supplement to the guide (Vol. 2).
The older trail remains as the "equestrian route;" horses are not allowed on
the PCT along the rim of Crater Lake.
