I certainly agree with this, since I live in the Seattle area and I'm
partial to my neck of the woods. :-)

Being under-appreciated is the result of being at the end of the the trail,
I guess. I've read several trail journals that have been posted to the web,
and it seems like all of them start out in Section A with painstaking detail
of every event, right down to how many blisters the hikers had on their feet
and what they ate for dinner each night. They go on at great length about
the beauty of the desert scenery and the character of the trail. Of course,
as the journal goes on the details get more and more sketchy as the hiker
settles down to the arduous business of long-distance hiking. By the time
they get out of California, their journals generally read like this: "August
4th, entered Oregon. August 27th, entered Washington. September 20th,
thank God I'm done." Hey, wait - where's all the cool details about the
Northern Washington Cascades? Didn't you see *anything*? Sigh. Oh well.
:-)
