Two years ago I joined a friend hiking the JMT at 1,000 Island Lake after
Labor Day. I inquired at the Mammoth Ranger Station about permits and they
indicated that I didn't need one but should sign the register at the trail
head in Agnew Meadows in case an emergency arose and they needed to know my
plans. I did register.
That was two years ago, maybe it has changed. I know that all trail quotas
are lifted, but you may have to still get the permit. Again, after Labor Day
are you going to see any rangers in the higher reaches? Not likely.
