Yes, you DO need some type of map or guide. The PCT book is pretty good since
it gives trail descriptions, camping info, next water, etc.
What I do is take my books to Kinkos and have them 3-hole punched and the
binding cut off. Then I put the pages in a 3-ring binder where I can remove
pages as needed. This works fine for me as a section hiker. As a thru-hiker,
I suppose you'd just include the next chapter in your resupply box.
