[pct-l] Trek Pole/Self Arrest Shaft?

Black Diamond makes a hybrid ski pole/ice axe.  It's called the Black
Diamond Whippit Self Arrest Shaft.  Would this be appropriate for something
like the PCT?  I'm guessing that it would be difficult/impossible to chop
steps with such a contraption. Any comments welcome, thanks.
