This _really_ depends on personal circumstances.  Who are you hiking with at
the time?  How's the weather?  Are you injured?  Are you taking a layover
day?  And, of course, what can you afford?

Cost wasn't a big obstacle for me, but I saw no need to stay in motels
unless there was a real desire to do so.  I stayed in motels in the
following towns:  Idyllwild, Wrightwood, Tehachapi, Lone Pine, Mammoth
Lakes, Echo Lake (in a friend's cabin), Interstate 80 (home to the Bay Area
for 3 days), Dunsmuir, Snoqualmie Pass, Skykomish, and Stehekin.  By the end
I was only staying in motels when the weather was bad.  A hot shower and
laundry were much more important than a bed to me.  These can often be found
without paying for a motel.
