With full agreement about the need for "a spot of luck" to complete the PCT, I
believe your statement above is incorrect.  In a normal snow year (and so far
this year looks like one) most hikers who intend to hike the length of the
PCT, succeed.  I have no exact figures, but believe 70 to 80 percent of
thruhikers in '97 finished.
