[pct-l] Map Accuracy

Re: Brick raised the question of map accuracy based on a dinner with
Jeffrey Schaeffer.

I talked to a couple of geologists, a beta testor for GPS software and a
couple of longtime GPS hikers. Their opinion is that there are few
innaccuracy in a topo map. Where inaccuracies exist it is usually a
man-made structure. There is also a difference between a regular map and a
"provisional" map. The former is accurate to 1/2 an elevation line while
the later is unchecked. There is also a difference between the 1927 datum
and the 1980's datum. I didn't understand much of the technical syuff but
the bottom line was that they felt that the accuracy was quite good.
