News to me. Schaffer is anal enough that I beleive him. 

The whole thing came up because the line drawn on the map by using GPS
lat-long is sometimes quite a ways from  the line Schaffer drew, and
Schaffer was explaining why......

His big deal was that the arial data used to make the maps was not
adequately field checked in the rugged area traversed by the PCT, so there
are significant errors there. It may be that your geologists hiked areas
that received adequate field checks?

I don't know enough to evaluate the data, so I'll just take the words of
the experts. Maybe the "man made" stuff was.
