[pct-l] PCT Update - Seiad Valley, CA

Jethro and Daisy May reached Seiad Valley, CA today after hitching there
from Castella.  Surprise!  They found three other hikers in the Seiad
Valley area, and the Swiss couple that they=92ve been with are still tryi=
ng
the trail from Castella North.  One of the bridges over the Sacramento
River on a road they were hiking on this am was washed out - no way to
cross the torrent and a long detour, so they just gave up and hitched to
Seiad Valley.  =


Some notes from other legs for others out there:

Section P from Castella to Seiad - rangers say the snow is down to 5,500=92=

The state campground in Castella costs $3/pp/pn and has 50 cent showers f=
or
5 minutes.  The campground fee is paid at the entrace and hiker-campers a=
re
relegated to a site 1 mile from the park entrance!  Castella overall got =
a
thumbs down from them in terms of hiker support.  The post office is
particularly unfriendly.  The town is also hard to hitch out of.

Peavine Creek north to Deer Creek; (further to the south) they lost the P=
CT
due to snow and numerous blowdowns.  Even on the forest service roads,
blowdowns are a major problem - impassable for horses and nearly so by
foot.  Section 31, map 4 in general is washed out very badly.

Centepede Creek to Squaw Valley Creek there is no snow, but a major crop =
of
poison oak.  Many places hanging over the trail up to 5=92 high.

They are finding that a map compass and an altimeter is the way to go to
ensure you are at least close to the trail.  They don=92t have an altimet=
er,
but have used one with other hikers along the trail in the snow -
invaluable.  Said they are adding it to their Christmas list this year!

Snow is a pain, but it is melting.  Lots of low overcast now and they pla=
n
to spend the next several days (through 2 July) camping and not hiking (o=
n
vacation?) waiting to link up with another hiker friend from the East. =

Couldn=92t stay at the RV park in Seiad Valley - $7.50 per night per coup=
le
in tents.  They=92ll stay out on the trail for a while.

We=92re sending them some fresh banana bread - I=92ll tell you it was gre=
at! =

We left some to mail them in the morning!
