Firearms are illegal in all Nat Parks. Nat Wild and Nat Forests and BLM land
have differing regulations depending on area. The general rule is some areas
allow hunting w/a permit. Also in most states it is illegal to carry any
weapon
concealed unless you have a permit.
But in 20 years of hiking and climbing, including grizzly country (where I did
have a shotgun loaded with a solid slug) I have never had the need nor the
inclination to use anywhere in the Continental USA...
I suggest to please just leave any weapons at home and enjoy the PCT...take
some
pepper spray-- in fact I reccomend (and I give) females that request some
thing or show concern (I never offer- only if asked), pepper spray with a 10
minute course in how to use it...
The worst thing I am afraid of in the backcountry is some
untrained/half-trained
fool popping off a few rounds and not realizing what a trajectory is and where
everyone is located within a mile or so! I think anyone carrying a weapon is
really missing the experience and the intent...even with a week in grizzly area
and seeing two (at a distance) practicing good camp discipline is all that is
needed. Take more power bars rather than a weapon.
Hopefully end of issue. Any debate I would be glad to take private (off
the list).
Just my 2 cents worth.
