p. cat, my friend sonia hiked with another woman, and they did cali in '94.
they said that the worst part of the trail was the freaks that came into the
hills above LA, in the san gabriels. mostly strung out men dealing with
divorces. my only advice is if we aren't still together in that section, find
another to hike with, for safety's sake, just as our start together.

maybe it won't hurt to bring your ice axe through those parts, too.
About guns: I don't recommend them. if you're in a situation where you need
to pull it on someone, then you have to use it. Not many people out there
realize the action of a pulled trigger. I'd rather lose my money on a 100
mile section than kill someone out in the hills during a through hike. but
it'd make an interesting story,...
